Citizen Identity for the Self-Employed 2026: Logging Into Authorities Online

Most self-employed people (OSVČ) know these days that they have a data box (datová schránka) by law and an obligation to file tax returns and statements electronically. Less well known is that you don't need the data box at all to log into state portals. Citizen Identity (Identita občana) is the unified way of logging into state services, and for day-to-day work it is often faster and more convenient than digging out your data box credentials. In this article, we'll go through what login means exist, where you'll use them as an entrepreneur, and which one is worth setting up.
What Citizen Identity Is
Citizen Identity is a state-guaranteed system for verifying identity for online public administration services. It works as a universal key: you set up a login means once and use it on dozens of portals, from the financial administration through the ČSSZ (Czech Social Security Administration) to the Citizen Portal or health insurance companies. An overview of the means and guides is available on the official website info.identita.gov.cz.
The means differ in their so-called level of assurance under the European eIDAS regulation (low, substantial, high). Put simply: the higher the level, the more services the means unlocks. For an ordinary self-employed person's agenda, the substantial level is enough; some services require high.
What Login Means Exist
According to the official overview at info.identita.gov.cz/idp, you have these main options:
Bank Identity
The most widespread route. If you use internet banking with ČSOB, Česká spořitelna, Komerční banka, Air Bank, Moneta, Raiffeisenbank, Fio, UniCredit, Creditas, mBank, or Partners banka, you have bank identity practically without any effort – you log into state services the same way you log into your bank. Nothing to set up at an office, no trip to Czech POINT.
The eGovernment Mobile Key
A free app from the state with a high level of assurance. After activation, you log in by confirming on your phone, without copying SMS codes. For the self-employed who don't want to mix banking and business, it's the most practical state-provided means.
NIA ID
A combination of name, password, and an SMS code, free from the state, with a substantial level of assurance. Activation requires identity verification at a Czech POINT, or you can confirm it online via your data box – which is fastest for the self-employed, since you have a data box by law.
The eID Card
An identity card with a chip issued since 1 July 2018, with a high level of assurance. The drawback: you need a chip card reader and software, so it's better suited as a backup than as a daily tool.
Other Means
Private providers offer, for example, mojeID (CZ.NIC) or an I.CA certificate on a chip card. For an ordinary self-employed person, these aren't necessary.
📊Which Means to Choose
| Criterion | Bank identity | eGovernment Mobile Key |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free (with a bank account) | Free |
| Setup | Automatic with internet banking | App + activation via data box, another Citizen Identity means, or Czech POINT |
| Login | Same as into your bank | Confirming a notification on your phone |
| Suitable for | A quick start with no offices | Separating business from banking, high level of assurance |
Where You'll Use Citizen Identity as a Self-Employed Person
The MOJE dane Portal (DIS+)
You log into the tax information box at mojedane.cz in three ways: with Citizen Identity, with data box credentials, or with credentials assigned by the financial administration. Once logged in, you can see the status of your tax account, your personal tax calendar, your filing history, and you can file returns with pre-filled details. We have a detailed guide in our article on the MOJE dane portal.
The ČSSZ ePortal
According to official ČSSZ information, individuals log in either with data box credentials or via Citizen Identity, i.e. the Mobile Key, the eID card, NIA ID, bank identity, or mojeID. On the ePortal, you can file your statement of income and expenses, check paid advances, or view the status of insurance receivables.
We'd remind you that since January 2025 the self-employed must file their ČSSZ statement electronically if they have an activated data box established by law, which is practically every entrepreneur with a company ID number. The ČSSZ itself recommends filing directly from the ePortal: the form is pre-filled with the details the authority holds about you, and you see confirmation of filing immediately.
Health Insurers' Portals and the Citizen Portal
You'll use the same login means for health insurance companies' online counters (filing statements, checking payments) and for the Citizen Portal, where you can find register extracts or view the contents of your data box.
Citizen Identity vs. the Data Box
These are not competing systems but two different things. The data box is a delivery channel: official decisions arrive in it and the fiction of delivery applies after 10 days. Citizen Identity is a way of logging in: it proves who you are. You can happily log into the ČSSZ ePortal with bank identity, but decisions will still arrive in your data box. So you still have to check the box.
How to Set Up the eGovernment Mobile Key
📋Activation Step by Step
The Most Common Mistakes in Practice
- Relying only on data box credentials. A slip of paper with passwords gets lost and renewing credentials via Czech POINT takes time. With bank identity or the Mobile Key, you can always log in.
- Confusing login with delivery. Logging into a portal with Citizen Identity does not replace checking your data box – the fiction of delivery runs regardless of how you log in.
- Putting setup off until the filing deadline. Both NIA ID and the Mobile Key require a one-off activation. Don't set them up on the evening of 30 April when you need to send off a statement.
- A single means only. Keep a backup. When your bank takes internet banking down for maintenance, it's handy to also have an active Mobile Key or NIA ID.
Conclusion
Citizen Identity is the easiest way for the self-employed to handle mandatory electronic filings without hunting for data box passwords. If you have an account with a larger bank, bank identity works for you straight away; as a state alternative we recommend the eGovernment Mobile Key. It does not replace the data box, though – that remains a delivery channel you need to check regularly.
